Convenient day and evening educational sessions are available at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and are accepted by Medicare and most insurance companies. A variety of classes are taught by certified diabetes educators, registered nurses and registered dietitians. Our diabetes education program has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for meeting national standards for diabetes self-management education.

Diabetes Self-Management Program

Diabetes ManagementThis 3-day class is designed to help people with diabetes improve quality of life through knowledge and skills necessary for self care and management of the disease.

Day 1
  • Types of Diabetes and Definitions
  • Blood Glucose Monitoring and Setting Blood Sugar Goals
  • High and Low Blood Sugar Symptoms and Treatment
  • Medications/Insulin
  • Exercise

Day 2
  • Nutrition Therapy
  • Carbohydrate Counting
  • Meal Planning
  • Label Reading
  • Diet and Cardiovascular Disease

Day 3
  • Effects of Diabetes on Eyes, Heart, Nerves and Kidneys
  • Foot Care
  • Psychological and Support Issues
  • Behavioral Changes and Goals
Class Times:
Day: 9 AM to Noon
Evening: 6 PM to 9 PM
Class also available at Manatee Memorial Hospital.

Gestational Diabetes Education Class

Gestational Diabetes1-Day Class | 3 Hours

Lakewood Ranch Medical Center offers this 3-hour class to help expectant mothers who have developed diabetes during their pregnancies. You’ll learn ways to manage the diabetes and reduce risks to yourself and baby.

We will teach you about…

  • Blood Glucose Monitoring and Setting Blood Sugar Goals
  • Nutrition Therapy and Meal Planning
  • Exercise and Healthy Living to Reduce Risk to Mother and Baby
  • Medications and Insulin Therapy as Needed
Classes are taught weekly at LWRMC’s Women’s Center.
