Applying a tourniquet to stop bleeding

Traumatic injuries can occur as a result of a mass shooting, fall, automobile accident, natural disaster or some other event. Uncontrolled bleeding from trauma can lead to death within minutes without lifesaving intervention.

With this in mind, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center (LWRMC) will be hosting a free STOP THE BLEED® course on September 14, 2023. This 20-minute course is designed to educate attendees on how to respond to an emergency where a person is bleeding.

"People of all ages can learn these basic techniques to save someone’s life," says LWRMC general surgeon, Samuel Yelverton, MD. "When you can control blood loss before a patient arrives at the hospital, you increase the chance of survival."

Jamie Billingsley, Emergency Management Director at LWRMC, will lead the training. "The techniques attendees will learn are the same type of techniques that EMS and paramedics use," said Billingsley. "During this course, attendees will learn how to recognize a severe bleeding injury and the three steps you should take after calling 9-1-1. Using these techniques in an emergency could help save a life."

The three steps you should take after calling 9-1-1 are:

  1. Apply pressure with your hands
  2. Pack the wound to control bleeding
  3. Correctly apply a tourniquet
