A new year is time for a new start. Incorporating these small changes may help improve your overall wellbeing.
The start of a new year is often seen as a time for fresh beginnings, and many people choose to focus on improving their health. Lakewood Ranch Medical Center’s Clinical Nutrition Manager, Corista Mosher, MBA, RDN, LDN, CNSC, knows that embarking on a journey toward better health can be daunting. Here are five of her simplest nutrition tips to help you start the new year off on the right foot.
1. Prioritize Hydration
Water is essential for overall health, and staying adequately hydrated can have a significant impact on your energy levels and bodily functions. “Make it a goal to drink enough water throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses, though individual needs may vary. Carrying a reusable water bottle can serve as a reminder to keep sipping throughout the day,” says Mosher.
2. Focus on Small Changes
When it comes to healthy eating, small changes can lead to big results. Instead of overhauling your entire diet overnight, Mosher recommends incorporating one or two nutritious habits at a time. This could mean adding an extra serving of vegetables to your dinner plate or swapping out sugary snacks for fruits and nuts. These manageable changes can make the transition to healthier eating more sustainable and less overwhelming.
3. Embrace Meal Planning
Meal planning is an effective strategy for maintaining a balanced diet. By planning your meals in advance, you can ensure that you're consuming a variety of nutrients and avoiding last-minute, less healthy food choices. “Start by setting aside time each week to plan your meals and create a shopping list based on those plans,” she advises. This approach can save you time, reduce food waste and help you stick to your nutrition goals.
4. Don’t Forget About Sleep
“Adequate sleep is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle, yet it's often overlooked when discussing nutrition. Sleep deprivation can lead to increased cravings for unhealthy foods and negatively impact your metabolism. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support your body's nutritional needs and overall well-being,” Mosher explains.
5. Practice Mindful Eating
Mindful eating involves paying attention to the flavors, textures, and sensations of your food. This practice encourages you to savor each bite, leading to increased satisfaction and a greater awareness of your body's hunger cues. “By focusing on your meals without distractions, you can prevent overeating and make more conscious food choices,” she adds. Being present during meals may also help you to connect with those around you.
“As you begin your journey towards healthier eating habits this new year, remember that consistency is key,” Mosher remarks. “By incorporating these nutrition tips into your daily routine, you'll be well on your way to achieving your new year resolutions and enjoying a healthier lifestyle.”
