Education and Support
Lakewood Ranch Medical Center offers education and support for expectant families before, during and after the birth experience. Please call 941-782-2229 for more information or to register for any of the opportunities listed below.
We offer a special package for two that includes the following classes: Prepared Childbirth, Breastfeeding, Baby Care Basics and Infant CPR for $100. That’s a savings of at least $20!
Families can learn about our Women’s Center, tour our Labor and Delivery area and sign up for childbirth classes.

Prepared Childbirth Series
This series of classes is a comprehensive program designed to prepare a couple physically and mentally for birth. This is an experience not to be missed and is completely different from what is available on the internet or TV! Topics include pregnancy discomforts, preparing for physical changes, labor and delivery, hospital policies and procedures. Couples will also learn about pain management techniques and anesthesia pain relief.
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Dates: Five week series. Wednesdays, May 23 - June 20
Prepared Childbirth Weekend Crash Course
Fee: $70, registration is required.
Time: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Xtra TLC - Training for Labor Coping
This class provides the opportunity to learn and practice additional techniques and ideas for coping with the pain and stress of labor. The class was created to help women and their partners gain more confidence in their involvement in the labor and birth process, whether it is a medicated, minimally medicated or non-medicated experience.
Fee: Included in Prepared Childbirth Class, or $15 if not enrolled in Prepared Childbirth. Registration is required.

Baby Care Basics
This class is designed to help parents get a head start on caring for their baby. Topics include general infant care such as bathing and diapering, newborn appearance and characteristics and a review of standard newborn tests and procedures.
Fee: $15 for class, registration is required.

Learn the most up-to-date information about what to expect when breastfeeding your newborn. Topics include getting started, nursing discreetly and ways to manage nursing while working.

HypnoBirthing is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress-free birth. Through a very simple program of self-hypnosis and education, women and their birthing companions learn the art and joy of experiencing birth in a more comfortable manner. For best results, it is recommended that this class be taken as early as your sixteenth week; however, it may be taken anytime during your pregnancy.
Fee: $80 per couple
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Dates: Tuesdays, April 10 - May 8
Get hands-on practice in the proper techniques of infant CPR based on the latest recommendations of the American Heart Association. This is a very popular class for parents, grandparents, siblings and babysitters. Please sign up early as classes fill rapidly!

Increase the Peace — Parenthood Prep
Fun, informative and interactive, “Increase the Peace” will give you valuable insights about each other's personality types and lay a new foundation for an even better, more rewarding relationship as you begin your parenting roles.

Prenatal Yoga Class
Classes are taught by an experienced, certified prenatal yoga instructor. Yoga is very well suited for pregnancy on several levels. In addition to building strength and endurance, expectant women learn relaxation, proper breathing, wellness and body awareness, all of which are not only extremely beneficial during pregnancy, but also during labor and delivery.

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils During Pregnancy and Labor
Learn how to use essential oils safely during pregnancy and labor. Registration is required.
Fee: Class is FREE. $20 to make and take home a "Sleepytime" roller, "Flu Away" roller and a "Healthy Hands" anti-bacterial spray.

Love My Tummy Time
"Tummy Time" is the foundation for all other developmental skills. Not just gross motor skills like crawling, sitting and walking, but also fine motor skills, visual motor skills and cognitive skills too. Teach your baby to love "tummy time" and thrive with each new developmental milestone. Bring your questions and meet other moms. Classes are for babies one week to pre-crawling and their caregivers. Expectant parents are welcome.

Join us for a weekly informal gathering for moms/parents and their newborns. Our facilitator and other moms are available to offer support and suggestions for each other. An optional light lunch is provided courtesy of Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. No need for a reservation, just come by!

Postpartum Adjustment Support Group
This group is for women who find that the adjustment to becoming a new mother is a little more difficult than anticipated. Share, listen, cry and laugh with other new moms and a facilitator who is a Postpartum Adjustment Support Specialist. Babies and children up to age three are welcome.
Time: 9:30 – 11 a.m.
